The word seasoned when applied to firewood suggests that it has been stored outside during the summer months to dry ready for the winter. A fresh cut log can be as much as 50% moisture!
When burning fresh sawn firewood a huge amount of the energy stored within the log is consumed to boil off the moisture within the log - that is before any energy in the form of heat can be radiated from the fireplace or woodburning stove etc. In other words it takes longer to achieve any heat from the log and the heat will be given off for a much shorter period!
Burning seasoned firewood allows the heat to be radiated from the log in a much shorter time which means less wood is required to build an effective fire and that the fire will give off more heat in less time!
Our seasoned logs generally contain between 9 - 20% moisture and sometimes even less, they have been cut during the summer and allowed to gently air dry for several months ready for successful burning in the winter.
Our mixed wood is a combination of hard/soft logs are normally a mixture of ash, oak, birch, beech among others and can be burnt either straight away or after storing indoors for 24 - 48 hours for best results!
Prices start from £45 per half dumpy equivelant (approx 110 - 125 logs)(8-12ins to fit most stoves) or £75 for dumpy equivelant (approx 250 - 260 logs) or £260 4 bag equivelant (approx 1000 - 1040 logs)

Tree Works / Felling
Complete removal of a tree down to ground level. This maybe the solution for trees that are dead, dying or dangerous. In some cases the solution allowing for a structure that is planned for development, such as an outdoor building.
Well maintained and trimmed hedges, shrubs and trees will significantly improve the overall appearance of the surrounding area.
We offer a complete hedge cutting and hedge trimming service throughout the year. Hedges require regular trimming to keep them dense and compact. We carry out hedge trimming on small domestic hedges through to hedge cutting on much larger hedges and bushes on commercial land.
Removing small amounts of the trees crown, providing a more aesthetic and balanced tree appearance, also preventing branches from obstructing property.
This process involves reducing the size of the tree's overall canopy. This is achieved by shortening the branches evenly throughout the crown. During this process dangerous deadwood and crossing branches are removed or pruned to minimize the possibility of fallen broken branches. This results in a balanced shape allowing the tree to re grow from the established growth points which remain on the branches. This technique is used for many reasons such as to reduce wind resistance and curtail root spread, or to control the size of a tree in a restricted environment.
Tree stumps can often be deemed unattractive as well as attracting fungi and parasites to your garden. Stump grinding is the most cost effective method for removing unwanted stumps. It offers an advantage over the old fashioned approach of using diggers, winches, or digging by hand, all of which are very labour intensive and involve a certain amount of ground disturbance. Stump grinding eradicates any unnecessary work offering minimal ground disturbance to the area around the stump.
Stump grinding is a very effective solution to complete eradication of an entire stump, offering advantages such as the ability to replant where the tree once stood, or provide foundations for outdoor buildings.
The range of machines we arrange to come in are accessible through the smallest of areas from front door to garden gate and can remove any size stump from small to large.
Upon completion of stump removal, the remaining hole will be back-filled with soil and grinding waste, the area around the stump left clean and tidy.
I called Mr and Mrs Rees-Teucher, the owners of Somerset-Logs, a firm for landscaping, tree felling and fencing in July and they did a splendid job of taking down a very large hedge and erecting a fence in its place. The materials were passed onto me at cost price which was a great saving. They came to see the work and the estimate was sent in double quick time together with a date for the work. The work was agreed and they did it in only three days. They were always on time, did what they promised, were very pleasant to have around and the work cannot be faulted. This led to a second job which was equally well done with the same effort, speed and ingenuity. Each time, when the job was finished, they left everything in excellently clean condition. I can recommend this company with confidence. Thank you, Ken and Liz for what you have done here and I wish you every success for the future.

Somerset Logs quote for the fencing job was not the cheapest quote that we had but I was so glad that we engaged Ken, and his team, to do the work. The job was not without it's snags but they took them in their stride, started and completed the job on schedule, did everything that they had contracted to do and more and all with a cheerful attitude. Thanks for a super job well done.

I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Somerset Logs for any tree work. I have a small plot of land with four trees which were approx: 25m to 35m, one of which overhang the road, another two overhang our neighbour's property. Ken carried out a thorough survey and provided a competitive price, clearly explaining what was involved. The team arrived promptly as arranged and worked well together to solve the different problems which inevitably arose. Their equipment was well maintained and suitable for the job in hand. Their professionalism, capability, knowledge and safety ethic ensured that the job was completed on time. Throughout the job they were on hand to explain and advise, and their attention to detail in leaving a clear site and tidy cuts has transformed our property.
Thanks to Ken, Liz, Paul and Alan for all your hard work.
